Former President Barack Obama took an apparent swipe at President Donald Trump's immigration policies, condemning the demonization of migrants.
In a social media post on Sunday (June 15), Obama addressed immigration amid protests against Trump's crackdown and sweeping ICE raids.
The former president's post also came on the 13th anniversary of the establishment of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The immigration policy, launched during Obama's presidency, allows children brought to the U.S. by immigrants to receive a renewable, two-year period of deferred action from separation and makes them eligible for a work permit.
DACA has recently faced legal challenges from the Trump administration amid its immigration crackdown. The program is currently still in effect for those who were already recipients.
"DACA was an example of how we can be a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. And it's an example worth remembering today, when families with similar backgrounds who just want to live, work, and support their communities, are being demonized and treated as enemies," Obama wrote Sunday on social media.
Obama's post comes amid anti-ICE protests across the country, sparked by one started in Los Angeles, where Trump deployed the National Guard and the Marines.
"We can fix our broken immigration system while still recognizing our common humanity and treating each other with dignity and respect. In fact, it’s the only way we ever will," Obama said Sunday.
