President Donald Trump launched an attack on former President Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize win just hours before his own campaign for the award failed, per NDTV.
On Thursday (October 10), Trump claimed Obama didn't deserve to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, suggesting that the move to award the former president was politically motivated.
“He got it for doing nothing. Obama got a prize—he didn’t even know what. He got elected, and they gave it to Obama for doing absolutely nothing but destroying our country,” Trump said at the White House.
Trump's comment came amid his own campaign for the award. The president touted his recent success in helping broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, claiming that he has "ended eight wars" during his term.
Instead of Trump, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Peace Prize to María Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader who has fought for democratic reform against the Nicolás Maduro regime.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung called the committee’s decision a political snub.
“The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace. He has the heart of a humanitarian... there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will," Cheung said.
Several MAGA conservatives attacked Obama's Nobel Peace Prize win as they criticized Trump's exclusion.
“President Obama was given a Nobel months into his Presidency without ending any wars. President Trump has now ended EIGHT wars," Katie Miller, wife of Trump advisor Stephen Miller, said.
“The woke Nobel Committee gave Obama a peace prize for doing nothing. They wouldn’t know peace if it stared them in the face," Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) wrote.
Despite the failed campaign, Trump’s aides said he will continue his global diplomacy.
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives,” Cheung said.
